A purchasing engineer sourcing barrels for a 160 mm bore dump-truck hoist cylinder gets two workable quotes in the same week: one drawn from E355, one from 20MnV6, with the 20MnV6 offer carrying a double-digit price premium. Nothing on the drawing tells him which to sign, because both grades can be supplied cold drawn and honed to the same bore tolerances. The decision lives in three numbers from the design file.
The short verdict: for general industrial cylinders working at or below roughly 250 bar, E355 is the smarter default - it costs less, welds without drama and is stocked everywhere. When working pressure, cycle count or weight budget push harder - telescopic stages, mining dump bodies, crane booms - 20MnV6 pays its premium back through thinner walls and better fatigue behavior. E355 is a plain carbon-manganese engineering steel named after its specified minimum yield strength of 355 MPa. It is delivered to EN 10305-1 for seamless precision tubes or EN 10305-2 for welded-and-drawn tubes, and it is routinely cross-referenced to the older St52 and St52.3 designations, which is why so many legacy cylinder drawings already call for it. The chemistry stays deliberately simple, with carbon at or below 0.22 percent and manganese up to 1.60 percent: good weldability, predictable machining and a fine ferritic-pearlitic structure that hones cleanly. Cold drawing work-hardens the wall, so in a hard-drawn or stress-relieved delivery condition the measured yield sits comfortably above the 355 MPa baseline.
20MnV6 brings two strengthening levers that E355 does not have. Manganese runs at 1.20 to 1.60 percent, and vanadium - typically 0.10 to 0.20 percent - forms fine carbonitrides that refine the grain and add precipitation strength. Depending on whether the tube is normalized or quenched and tempered, delivered yield commonly lands between 440 and 550 MPa, with tensile strength typically in the 640 to 780 MPa range and higher in fully hardened conditions. The grade appears in EN 10294-1 hollow-bar listings and in Chinese cylinder-tube specifications, and it is frequently ordered against ASTM A519 dimensions as well. The same response to heat treatment is why 20MnV6 also turns up on induction-hardened piston rods.

Stay with E355 when the duty is conventional. Press cylinders, clamp barrels on injection-molding machines, agricultural lift rams and material-handling cylinders working around 160 to 250 bar rarely need more than E355 delivers, especially once cold drawing lifts the real yield well past the nominal minimum. Its remaining advantages are commercial rather than metallurgical: seamless and welded-and-drawn versions are stocked across the whole size ladder, lead times stay short, and the simple chemistry keeps the girth welds for port bosses and clevis flanges routine - no preheat gymnastics, no exotic fillers.
It also holds geometry predictably. On the honing line, an E355 barrel reaches H8 bore tolerance with a Ra 0.4 finish in fewer passes than a harder alloy, which trims cost on OEM volumes where every second of machining is priced into the barrel.

In comparable conditions 20MnV6 delivers 100 to 150 MPa more yield strength than E355, which lets a designer shave wall thickness at the same pressure, cut barrel weight, or buy extra safety margin without growing the outer diameter. That trade matters most in mobile and multi-stage equipment: telescopic dump-truck cylinders, crane boom extensions, refuse-packer rams and mining machinery, where the cylinder has to lift the very steel it is made from.
Pulsating pressure is the second trigger. Higher tensile strength together with the refined grain structure improves fatigue life under millions of pressure cycles, which is why high-duty mobile cylinders often specify 20MnV6 for barrel and rod alike. Two cautions apply: state the delivery condition explicitly - quenched and tempered for maximum strength, normalized where welding comes first - and recheck the carbon equivalent if the barrel will be welded, since manganese and vanadium raise hardenability.

The practical takeaway: hold either grade to identical dimensional and finish criteria. A first-class 20MnV6 barrel with a poor hone will leak before an average E355 barrel honed to spec, so agree bore tolerance, roughness and inspection records before the steel is cut.
